What is Roulette?
by admin
Roulette is a casino game that has offered glamour, mystery and excitement to casino-goers since the 17th Century. The game is easy enough for beginners to pick up and offers a surprising amount of depth for serious players. It is available at most online casinos and many land-based casinos as well. The word ‘roulette’ is derived from the French for wheel, and it is believed that the game was developed from the Italian game Biribi. The game has a long history and is played in countries all over the world. There are even online versions of the game where you can place your bets from any computer connected to the internet. Whether you are playing at home, in the office or in a real casino, the rules of roulette remain the same. The aim of the game is to correctly predict where the ball will land when it comes to rest in one of the numbered pockets on the roulette wheel. Players can choose to bet on individual numbers, various groupings of numbers, whether the number is odd or even and if it is high or low. To make a bet, players place chips on the betting mat of the table. The croupier then spins the wheel and the ball is dropped into it. The player’s chips are then revalued in accordance with the odds of the bet they have made. A player can win a large sum of money by correctly predicting where the ball will come to rest. During the initial stages of roulette, it was common for people to raise funds by playing this game. This was because it was a very enjoyable and social activity. Many of the old roulette wheels can still be found in museums and private collections. It is also a very easy way to make money, and as such it has been popular in the past for people to raise money for causes such as building cathedrals or expeditions to Africa. The roulette cylinder was invented in the 17th Century by Blaise Pascal, a French physicist, mathematician and philosopher, as part of his pursuit of perpetual motion. The game soon became popular in France, then spread to the United States, where it was banned at first because of rampant cheating by both operators and gamblers. In the early days, roulette was played on makeshift tables with a single zero and a number six. The game was then developed with a betting layout, a revolving wheel and other security features to prevent cheating. The modern roulette wheel is made of a variety of materials including resin, Teflon and ceramics. The material used has a significant impact on the game because a small, light ceramic ball makes more revolutions and jumps around more unpredictably before it lands on a number than a big, heavy ivory ball would. The difference in material and size also has an effect on the odds of winning a bet, as will the color of the ball.
