How to Win at Roullete

The game of Roullete has enthralled casino-goers since its inception in the 17th century. It’s a simple enough game: a ball rolls around a spinning wheel and players place bets on where it will land. The game offers a surprising level of depth for serious bettors and the right strategy can reap high rewards. The roulette wheel consists of a solid wooden disk slightly convex in shape. Around its rim are thirty-six metal compartments (called frets by roulette croupiers) painted alternately red and black and numbered from 1 to 36. A 38th compartment, called a green zero on American wheels and a green 00 on European wheels, is not part of either the first or last 18. If the ball lands on one of these, all bets lose. The house’s edge comes from the presence of these green numbers, which make winning outside bets more difficult. Inside bets (betting on individual numbers) are higher risk but offer a higher payout if successful. Outside bets (betting on positional groupings of pockets) are lower risk but offer a much lower payout if successful. Before you start betting, decide how much you can afford to win or lose and stick to that budget. Then choose a table within your budget. Each table carries a placard describing the minimum and maximum bets allowed. Some players like to watch their fellow gamblers, hoping they’ll pick up a tip by watching where the other players are placing their bets. While this can be fun, it won’t improve your odds more than chance. Once the game is over, the losing bets are cleared off the table and the winners are paid.
