The Game of Domino

The game of domino is played by placing tiles edge to edge against each other in such a way that the adjacent faces are either identical or form some specified total. Many different games can be played using a variety of sets of dominoes and rules vary by country. The most basic Western domino game is the block-and-draw game for two or four players; a double-six set is required, and each player draws seven tiles at random. The player who wins by playing the last tile in their hand or blocking another player wins the game. Unlike playing cards, which are marked with numbers on their faces, the identity-bearing face of a domino piece is divided into two squares, each marked with an arrangement of spots (called “pips”) like those used on six-sided dice, except that some squares have no pips. The number of pips on each end is generally zero to six, and the maximum number of pips is 28 unique pieces in a typical double-six set. Traditional dominoes consist of a rectangular shape, about one and a half inches wide by four inches high. Some larger sets of dominoes are available, but they’re usually not needed for most games. Some of the oldest domino sets are Chinese; these consist of a circular shape with a rectangular opening, and are a little longer than typical European dominoes. They also have more pips on each end, so that the maximum number of unique pieces in a Chinese set is 28. In the United States, the most common sets of dominoes are double-six (28 tiles) and double-nine (55 tiles). Larger sets such as double-twelve (91 tiles) or double-fifteen (136 tiles) are popular for games with more than four players and are often called extended sets. These extended sets increase the maximum number of pips on an end by three, so that a double-nine set has 28 unique pieces and a double-fifteen set has 29. However, this is a relatively small number especially when playing with more than four players, so most sets are not extended. The game of domino can be found in a variety of countries and is played by a large number of people, both children and adults. There are a wide variety of different rules for the various dominoes games, but most involve a number of sets of dominoes and a shuffled deck of tiles. Whether you’re a fan of the game or just enjoy watching it, you’ll likely be amazed by these incredible displays of dominoes toppled in a row. Lily Hevesh, a professional domino artist and YouTuber who has more than 2 million subscribers to her channel Hevesh5, creates intricate designs that tumble according to the laws of physics. She’s worked on team projects involving 300,000 dominoes and helped set a Guinness World Record for the most dominoes toppled in curved or circular arrangement: 76,017. She’s also created some of the most elaborate domino installations in the world, including a domino-based music video for Katy Perry. She has built her domino-based installations in a number of ways, from stacking and twisting them to setting them in circles. But one thing she says is essential to a great display: gravity!
