What is a Horse Race?
A horse race is a sporting event involving horses competing on a designated course. Horses are typically trained for racing at a young age to be able to perform in several different races and at varying distances, depending on the type of racing in which they are involved. A variety of betting is available, including win, place, and show wagers. Spectators may also bet on the outcome of the entire race, individual horses in a particular race, or combinations of multiple horses, such as a daily double (picking the winners of two consecutive races), an exacta (picking the first and second horse in order), and a quinella (picking the winners of six consecutive races). The history of horse racing in the United States predates the founding of the country, but its traditions are well established today. The sport is one of the most popular and widely attended in the world, and its history is intertwined with American culture. It began in the 12th century when English knights returned from the Crusades with swift Arab horses and bred them with English mares to produce racehorses that combined speed and endurance. Racing is an activity that requires tremendous physical and emotional effort from the animals involved. The most common injury to racehorses is a sudden, catastrophic breakdown known as exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage, which causes the blood vessels in the lungs to burst and cause extreme pain and bleeding. Many horses also experience bone fractures, ligament injuries, and internal bleeding. Injuries in the sport are so common that they have become a source of controversy and a point of debate between animal rights supporters and horse-racing industry defenders. A horse’s natural instinct is to run fast and enjoy it, but winning a race takes a lot of training to get the horse into a competitive mindset and to maintain it. In the wild, horses prefer to move together as a group, to keep each other safe, and to avoid the threat of predators. Racing is not naturally fit for them, and the resulting physical stress can cause them to suffer from mental and emotional distress. In the corporate world, a classic succession “horse race” pits several executives against each other in an open competition to be named chief executive officer. This method of selecting a new leader is widely considered an effective way to identify high performers, but some governance experts are concerned that it can distract from the bigger picture. Regardless, research shows that the overt nature of this type of competition can be motivating for employees and boost morale.
