The Impact of Gambling

Gambling is the act of putting something of value at risk in the hope of winning. It is a form of entertainment and a popular pastime around the world. People gamble for a variety of reasons including the excitement of winning, socialising and to escape from boredom. However, it is important to recognise when gambling becomes a problem and get help. There are various treatment options available to those suffering from gambling addiction, as well as self-help tips. A key element of gambling is that it involves placing an amount of money or other valuables on the outcome of an uncertain event. This event could be anything from a football match to a scratchcard. The result of the event will be determined by luck, chance or otherwise – whether it’s the roll of a dice, the spin of a roulette wheel, or the outcome of a horse race. This uncertainty and the fact that the result of an event can never be known for certain is what makes gambling so exciting and addictive. While many people enjoy gambling for the thrill of winning and socialising, for others it can be an expensive and dangerous habit. Gambling can lead to debt, family breakdown and even bankruptcy. For this reason, it is crucial to set a budget and stick to it. It is also important to know the rules and odds of the games you play and not to bet more than you can afford to lose. The risks of gambling include mental health problems, such as anxiety and depression. It can also affect physical health, such as heart disease and high blood pressure. It can also cause social problems, such as family violence and substance abuse. Gambling is also associated with increased suicide risk, especially among people with gambling disorders. There is a growing role for the evaluation of patients’ gambling behaviors in primary care settings. This is due to the prevalence of gambling in society, the potential for addictive behavior and the associated health risks. This review of articles published in MEDLINE (from 1966 to present) focuses on the impact of gambling behavior, screening strategies for pathological gambling and treatments for gambling disorder. The impacts of gambling can be viewed at three levels – personal, interpersonal and community/society level. Traditionally, most studies have focused on monetary costs and benefits, which are easily quantifiable. This approach neglects the nonmonetary impacts of gambling, which are more difficult to quantify. This article reviews complementing and contrasting views of the societal impacts of gambling, and develops a conceptual model for assessing these. This model offers a foundation for a common methodology that incorporates a public health perspective. This is a first step towards defining the role of gambling in society. It will also help guide future research and policy efforts.
